College Search

The College-Oriented Guidance Program at Marylawn is designed to help each student reach her full potential through career and college counseling. The Director of Guidance meets with all students individually beginning in freshman year. Discussion of interests and course selection occurs, thereby preparing each student for college from the very beginning of her high school career. The PSAT is a requirement of all sophomores and juniors. College admissions representatives are invited to Marylawn during the school day to meet with our students.

Particular attention is given to students in their junior and senior years through weekly guidance classes.  In junior year, students explore interests and aptitudes, set goals for their careers and college majors, seek out scholarship and grant opportunities, and create a preliminary list of college choices. Class utilization of the computer lab is incorporated for this purpose. All juniors receive SAT preparation through the English and Math Departments, and they are required to take their first SAT before the end of their junior year. Juniors also develop their college essays through the English Department for immediate use with their college applications in the fall of senior year.

The Guidance Department works closely with seniors and their parents, both in class and beyond, in the preparation of college applications. Periodic informational evenings and financial aid nights are provided for all parents. Seniors are permitted several excused college visit days during the fall semester.

Marylawn students and parents are well guided through the processes of transitioning to high school, maximizing potential during the four years of high school, and succeeding with the college application process.

To further enhance every girl’s experience here at Marylawn, we have on staff Sheila S. Slutsker, BS, MAC.  “Miss Sheila”, as she is affectionately known by the girls, is available to the young women of Marylawn as well as their families.  An individual student may request counseling through the Guidance Office or parents or faculty may suggest counseling for a student.
